Literature time! (My favourite time :-)
We are about to read a short story with the title 'Chicxulub' by T. C Boyle.
It was first published in (the prestigious) 'The New Yorker' (an American magazine) in 2004.

Slide 6 - Diapositive

While reading, keep in mind...
- The title is Chicxulub. (A devastating meteorite that wiped out the dinosaurs. Quite the event!)
- In a short story, the author has limited time to introduce characters and develop the story. Each word matters.
- In a short story, especially the beginning is important, it needs to hook the readers and set the scene. Pay attention to what happens in this story.
- Always ask yourself: who is telling the story? Is this a trustworthy narrator?
- Keep the literary device metaphor in mind, it will come in useful.

Also important: Metaphor
A metaphor is used in this story. A metaphor is a figure of speech that directly refers to one thing by mentioning another. It can clarify similarities between two different ideas.
Keep your eyes out for this!

Now read!
For next week's class, make sure you have read the whole story.
Keep an eye out for a metaphor. Also, pay attention to the particular way the story is told (perspective, is it chronological or not, what does this way of stoytelling 'do' to you)
