• It was handed over by the Qing dynasty in 1841, after the first Opium war.
• Hong Kong maintains separate governing and economic systems from that of mainland China under the principle of one country, two systems.
• Hong Kong has one of the highest HDI in the world ranking 4th.
• Hong Kong is the world's third-ranked global financial centre.
