Arabian peninsula

Before Islam:

  1. Nomadic People called Bedouins.

  2. Trading routes to Europe.

  3. A few large cities. 

  4. Many Gods.

Mohammed

  1. Born around 570.

  2. Belonged to the Quraysh tribe.

  3. He was born into a wealthy trading family in Mecca.

  4. The Quraysh were caretakers of the Ka'aba.

Mohammed

  1. Around 620 he got a message from the Angel Gabriël.

  2. He wanted to spread the word of Allah as his prophet.

  3. His tribe did not aprove. A monotheistic religion was bad for business.

Hijrah and return to Mecca.

  1. In 622 Muhammad fled to Medina. This is called the Hijrah. He founded the muslim comminity, the Ummah. 

  2. He was successful as a militairy leader and united tribes.

  3.  In 630 he had 10.000 followers so he could return to Mecca.

  4. By the time of his passing in 632 Muhammad united all Arabic tribes.

Jihad Growth of the Caliphate.

Different religions.

  1. Christian or Jew? Pay extra taxes and you would be excluded from high positions. 

  2. Other religion? Convert or die.

Europe.

  1. The Muslims were defeated at the Battle of Poitiers.

  2. The Frankish leader Charles Martel stopped them.
