Verbs in Spanish

There are three types of verbs in Spanish. 

In their simplest form, they are called infinitives and they end in:

- ar         -->      hablar (to speak)

-er          -->      comer (to eat)

-ir           -->       escribir (to write)

So, how do we change verbs to use them in sentences? 

We have to go gardening!  

• Start with the infinitive, and snip off the ending (-ar, -er or –ir)
• You are then left with the stem
• For example:

hablar --> take off -ar --> habl (stem)

Verbs in Spanish

Now you have to add the appropriate endings, according to who is doing it (this is called conjugating)

• In first person, the verb ending is always -o
• Think of it as yo = o
