OA Unit 12 Making decisions

Objectives: After finishing this unit you'll have learned more about taking decisions, using appropiate vocabulary and  when and how to use the Gerund.

Be in two minds  -> Be undecided or unsure about what to do

Be in a quandary -> Find it difficult to decide what to do

Be on the fence -> Have not yet reached a decision

Change your mind -> Change your decision

Have second thoughts -> Change your mind after more thought.

Keep your options open -> Postpone making a decision so that you can choose among several possibilities.

Make a snap decision -> A quick or hasty decision without taking the time to think it over.

Make up your mind -> Definitely decide on something.

Mull over something -> Think carefully before making a decision.

(A) toss-up -> The choice between two equally-good options (like tossing a coin).

Toy with an idea -> Consider something without giving it serious thought.

Weigh your options -> Consider which is the best choice.

Weigh the pros and cons -> Consider the advantages and disadvantages.

Talk to your neigbour about:

1. What do you consider to be important decisions that people have to make in their life?

2. Describe a time when you made a difficult decision.

3. How do you make important/difficult decisions? Do you ask someone for advice?

4. What do you do when you have found out that you made a wrong decision?

Be careful!!

Try, stop, remember and go on differ in meaning when used with an infinitive or a gerund

He tried ringing the bell, but there was no answer

He tried to reach the next branch, but it was too high

 1. (you try it in order to see what happens)

 2. (you attempt it, but do not necessarily achieve it).

He stopped smoking.

He stopped to smoke.

He remembered calling her.

He remembered to call her.
