What do you already know about perming hair?

Perming and Neutralising 

There are three main stages to the perm process: 

1. Softening- ( also known as the 'Reduction' phase)

2. Moulding- ( also known as the 'Shaping' phase)

3.  Fixing- ( also known as the 'Neutralisation' phase)

Softening (Reduction Phase)

What happens: A perm solution (commonly containing ammonium thioglycolate) is applied to the hair.

Purpose: This softens the hair by breaking disulphide bonds in the cortex, allowing the hair to become malleable.

Scientific name: Reduction phase.

Moulding (Shaping Phase)

 What happens: Hair is wound around rods or curlers in the desired curl pattern.

Purpose: This physically shapes the hair while it’s in a softened, flexible state.

Scientific name: Physical shaping or setting stage.

Fixing (Neutralization Phase)

What happens: A neutraliser (usually hydrogen peroxide) is applied.

Purpose: This "fixes" the new shape by reforming the disulphide bonds, locking the curl pattern into place.

Scientific name: Oxidation or neutralisation stage.
