  • Remember: I can define the difference between woody and herbaceous plants by naming at least two characteristics of each type.
  • Understand: I can explain how vascular bundles work by describing their role in the transport of water, minerals, and nutrients in plants.
  • Apply: I can use the concept of osmosis and evaporation to describe how water is pushed and pulled up through the stem, using correct biological terms in a short explanation.
  • Analyze: I can analyse annual rings by identifying what thick and thin layers say about the growing conditions in a given year.

Slide 1 - Diapositive

Plant structures

Slide 2 - Carte mentale

What type of rootsystem is shown in the picture?
A
Fibrous root system
B
Taproot system
C
Impossible to tell

Slide 3 - Quiz

What part of the root is mainly responsible for absorbing water?
A
Primary root
B
Root hairs
C
Entire root system
D
Different for each plant

Slide 4 - Quiz

Stems take many shapes. But there are 2 main types.

Can you think of the main difference between these 2 types of stem?

Slide 5 - Question ouverte

Osmosis helps plants absorb water.

Thanks to osmosis, water moves from a place of ... concentration to a place with ... concentration of water
A
high > low
B
low > high
C
Different each time

Slide 6 - Quiz

Herbaceous
  • Sturdy because of water
  • Wilts without water

Woody
  • Sturdy because of wood
Stems
A lot of plants have both woody and herbaceous stems!

!
sturdy = strong/ rigid /not wanting to bend easily

(to) wilt = plant losing its rigidity/sturdiness

Slide 7 - Diapositive

Here the wood is oldest
Here the wood is youngest
Lots of growth happened
Little growth happened

Slide 8 - Question de remorquage

Annual rings
  • Trees only grow during spring and summer
  • Spring > Big layer (lots of growth) > springwood
  • Summer > Thin layer (little growth) > summerwood
  • 1 layer springwood + 1 layer summerwood = 1 annual ring
It can be hard to tell the actual age of a tree from its annual rings.
The inner rings are usually pressed together, making it hard to tell them apart.

Functions of stems
  • Transport substances:
Water and nutrients
  • Rigidity (sturdiness)
  • Carries other structures:
Leaves, flowers, fruit
Lateral root is a different name for a secondary root

Slide 10 - Diapositive

Skip
You can skip the parts of the text called:
  • Parts of a stem
  • The stem of a tree: The trunk
