a Het geweten van Huck is gevormd of beter gezegd misvormd door de christelijke en racistische cultuur van het zuiden. Zijn geweten gebiedt hem Jim te verraden. Hucks hart is 'sound; in die zin dat Huck in staat is om, ondanks de racistische vooroordelen,Jim als persoon te waarderen en een echte vriendschap met hem op te bouwen. Op het moment dat Huck besluit Jim niet te verraden, wint zijn hart het van zijn geweten.
