§4.3: LEARNING GOALS
I can list the differences and similarities between how plants and animals regulate the gasses carbon dioxide and oxygen.
I can list the differences and similarities of the transport systems in plants and animals.
I can list the differences and similarities between how plants and animals excrete their waste products.
I can list the differences and similarities between how plants and animals gather information about their surroundings.

§4.2: MRS GREN
Movement:
moves with a part of itself or its entire body
Respiration:
turns food into energy
Sensitivity
: reacts to changes of its environment
Growth
: gets bigger
Reproduction
: can produce more individuals of the same species
Excretion
: produces waste products and removes those
Nutrition
: produces food or takes in food
Slide 13 - Diapositive
Plants
Take up/release gasses through openings in their leaves called STOMATA
Stomata open and close
Water and other nutrients come from the soil via ROOTS
Animals
Take up/release gasses through a breathing system.
This is different in different animals. Examples are Lungs and gills
Water and other nutrients come from food
NUTRIENT INTAKE
Slide 14 - Diapositive
Plants
One tube brings water up from the soil to the leaves
Another tube brings glucose and oxygen down from the leaves to the rest of the plant
Animals
Most animals use a blood transport system:
Pump (= heart)
A network of tubes (= vessels)
Fluid (= blood)
TRANSPORT
Slide 15 - Diapositive
Plants
Stomata release waste gasses
Other products are put in old leaves that fall off the plant
Animals
Breathing system releases waste gasses
Kidneys produce urine
Liver filters other waste which leaves the body through faeces
EXCRETION
Slide 16 - Diapositive
Plants
Move to face the sun
Sense gravity so their roots can grow down
Animals
Have senses to react to their environment
This is different depending on the animal
SENSITIVITY
Slide 17 - Diapositive
Plants
Flowers are used for reproduction
Animals spread pollen for plants so they can reproduce
Some plants reproduce by cloning themselves.
Animals
Male reproductive cells: Sperm cells
Female reproductive cells: Egg cells
Fertilization happens when the sperm + egg fuse together.
REPRODUCTION
Slide 18 - Diapositive
Short break (5 min)
Do not move from your seat
Keep your volume down!
Slide 19 - Diapositive
Lab journal general feedback
Overall well done!
Some general points of improvement:
Be complete, points were lost because of missing worksheets (or parts)
Text or answers are short or incomplete
Research questions have a question mark (?)!
Observations are not conclusions, it is something you notice during the experiment (like, the finger felt tired after 40 seconds)
Slide 20 - Diapositive
Lab journal general feedback
The grades will soon be in magister (wage should be changed to 1x instead of 2x).
Now take a look at your own lab journal and if you have questions please ask them to me!
Slide 21 - Diapositive
Homework
Complete all the exercises of §4.3
Study the glossary of §4.1, elements, §4.2 and §4.3
