In the colonies, there was no consideration of which peoples belonged to which - so countries with hundreds of peoples and cultures came together.

At some point the colonies became independent states.

Indonesia was a colony of the Netherlands.
It had the name:  the Dutch East Indies.
Since 1815

The Netherlands exploited Indonesia for their own gain: raw materials, agricultural products and minerals

Plantations
The European colonizers had an enormous influence on the landscape in south-east Asia.
They built plantations there. 
The colonizers also built roads and railways, as well as government buildings and residential areas in the cities.

How did the Dutch East Indies become independent?
During World War II, Japan ruled Indonesia.
After WW II, the Netherlands wanted the Dutch East Indies back.
But the local people wanted to be independent.

Consequence: war!
