What do you remember about mitosis?

What happens during prophase?

• Chromatin is condensed into chromosomes

• The nuclear envelope breaks down and disappears

• Spindle fibers form from centrioles in animal cells
  

What happens during prophase?

What about during metaphase?

• Spindle fibers attach to chromosomes

• Sister chromatids line up at the midline of the cell
  

What about during metaphase?

So now whats going on in anaphase?

• Sister chromatids at the midline are pulled apart and move to each end of the cell

• Each half of the cell now has a complete, identical set of chromosomes
  

So now whats going on in anaphase?

Last but not least, how about telophase?

• Spindle fibers break down

• A new nuclear envelope begins to form around each half of the cell

• Chromosomes begin to "de-condense" back into chromatin
  

Last but not least, how about telophase?

What happens next?

• Though not technically part of mitosis, it's still important.

• This is the final stage of cell division, where the parent cell fully splits into two different cells

• In plants a hard plate forms between the two cells called the "cell plate" which then gets replaced by a plasma membrane and cellulose cell wall.

• In animals the cell pinches in and splits along the "cleavage furrow" formed in the middle of the cell.
  

What about cytokinesis!

"cyto" - "kinesis"

Cyto means cell

Kinesis means movement

Cytokinesis is the movement of the new cells  apart from each other
