  1. Yeongbok grows up in North Korea. She thinks it is the greatest of all nations.
  2. Yeongbok’s brother and sister escape to South Korea. They live near Seoul.
  3. Yeongbok begins planning an escape after hearing about a new law to ‘banish’ relatives of defectors. 
  4. Yeongbok and her family cross the Yalu River into China and get lost. 
  5. Yeongbok and her family desperately ask a Chinese farmer for help. 
  6. A Chinese farmer contacts a broker, who sends Pastor Kim a video of Yeongbok and her family. 
  7. Pastor Kim bribes a Chinese police officer. From China, Yeongbok and her family take a secret route in order to cross the border with Vietnam. 
  8. Yeongbok stays in a safe house in Vietnam with her family. They want to cross illegally from Vietnam into Laos through a mountainous jungle.

  1. De documentaire gaat over de gevaarlijke reis die Noord- Koreaanse mensen ondernemen om het land te ontvluchten.
  2. Utopia betekent ‘ideale wereld’. Beyond Utopia betekent letterlijk: voorbij de ideale wereld. Mensen in Noord-Korea wordt verteld dat zij in de ideale samenleving wonen, terwijl het juist een van de meest repressieve regimes ter wereld is.
  3. Ze ontdekte dat het leven in de wereld buiten Noord-Korea veel beter en vrijer is.
  4. Yeongboks leven was in gevaar omdat haar broer en zus waren gevlucht. Een nieuwe wet bepaalde dat familieleden van vluchtelingen gestraft zouden worden.
  5. Nee, want China is een bondgenoot van Noord-Korea. Noord- Koreanen worden meteen teruggestuurd en zwaar gestraft.
  6. Seungeun Kim is een geestelijke uit Zuid-Korea. Hij helpt mensen uit Noord-Korea om hun land te ontvluchten door ze in contact te brengen met mensensmokkelaars.
  7. ‘An underground railroad’ (r. 130-131) is een geheim (illegaal) netwerk van vluchtroutes. De term verwijst naar het geheime netwerk van routes en veilige huizen dat in de negentiende eeuw werd gebruikt door gevluchte slaven in de Verenigde Staten om naar vrije staten en Canada te ontsnappen.

8. Direct naar Zuid-Korea vluchten is onmogelijk, omdat het grensgebied vol ligt met (twee miljoen) landmijnen.

9. De ‘brokers’ (mensensmokkelaars) helpen bij de vlucht, maar verdienen vooral veel geld aan deze ‘handel’.
10. Kim werkte als missionaris in China. Hij zag alle dode Noord-Koreaanse vluchtelingen in de Yalu-rivier en sprak met Noord-Koreaanse weeskinderen. Hij besloot dat hij moest helpen.
11. De mensensmokkelaars vragen om meer geld, waarna pastor Kim betaalt. Eenmaal in Thailand moet de familie zichzelf aangeven bij de autoriteiten en bewijzen dat ze Noord-Koreaanse vluchtelingen zijn. Ze zullen dan naar Zuid-Korea gestuurd worden.
12. Ja, de vlucht was succesvol. Yeongbok woont in Seoul met haar familie. Ze werkt daar als accountant (zie r. 25-31).

  2. Billa thinks these clips do not reflect ‘real life’ and are an ‘illusion’ (ll. 24-25). Life for Albanians in Britain is often very hard, and Albania is slowly emptying out.
