Clauses
  • The thief who robbed an old lady was sent to jail.
  • Main clause: the thief was sent to jail.
  • Relative clause: Who robbed an old lady.

We can smush two sentences together like this:
The thief robbed an old lady
The thief was sent to jail

Defining vs non-defining
His brother who works at the supermarket is a friend of mine.
He has more than one brother. The one I’m talking about works at the supermarket.  < -------- defining 

His brother, who works at the supermarket, is a friend of mine.
He has only one brother, and that brother works at the supermarket.

Relative clause
Every sentence has a verb and a noun.
The relative clause starts with a relative pronoun: who, whom, whose, that, or which.

Who for people                                                        The lady who I helped thanked me.
Which for animals and things                           The computer which I bought yesterday broke down.
That for people, animals and things              Here is the hat that I bought in New York.
Whom  who + preposition                                   I was invited by the professor whom I met at the            
                                                                                        conference.
Whose for possession                                         Do you know the boy whose mother is a nurse?

  • Whom mag alleen gebruikt worden in non-defining relative clauses.
