Self-test

Before starting, you should realize that a self-test is NOT about speed but about testing your knowledge and understanding of the grammar offered to you in this unit. So please, read the instructions carefully before filling in your answers and spend sufficient time on checking your answers, especially if you find your answers to be incorrect.

1. The I-person refers to his friend Rabbit as 'not being the most incredible brainbox'. (l.3) Explain in your own words what he means by that.

2. Find 2 other words on page 72 with the same meaning as the expression mentioned in question 1.

3. Why doesn't Sam want Rabbit to know the real age of Sam's mother?

4. Find a synonym on p.72 for the verb 'understand'.

5.  Why is the word chemist's (p.73, right-hand textcolumn, fifth line from the top) spelled like this? In other words, why the 's ? 

6. Why did Sam and Alicia (his girlfriend) decide to go to the Superdrug instead of the chemist's next door to where they were having a drink (which was closest)?

7. What does '3 quid' mean? (p. 73, right-hand text column, 8 lines from teh bottom). And 'a fiver'? (the line below)

8. Why does Sam compare his Mum's face with 'a piece of paper that someone was screwing up'? In other words what are the similarities between these two? (p. 74, right-hand column, 4th line from the top onwards)

9. - What is the very first reaction of Sam's Mum (in words, not in sounds/noise) to the news of her son going to be a father?(p. 75)

    - What does this tell us about her?

10. Mention 2 aspects of the opinion of Alicia's parents on this whole situation.  (pp 74-75)
