Comparative adjectives

• one-syllable adjectives    -->   -er              big --> bigger
  

• two-syllable adjectives ending in-le -er -ow -y         (leerowy)                      -->   -er             clever --> cleverer

• (other) two or more syllable adjectives                                                 --> 'more' or 'less'             intelligent --> more intelligent                                                                            

  

Superlative adjectives

• one-syllable adjectives    -->   -est              big --> biggest
  

• two-syllable adjectives ending in -le -er -ow -y         (leerowy)                      -->   -est             clever --> cleverest

Warning!

-y after a consonant 

-> -ier in the comparative

 -> -iest in the superlative 

Lazy: Shannon's dog is lazier than Femke's cat.

Yanni's panda is the laziest of them all.

Double the consonant after a short vowel

Shannon's dog is bigger than Femke's cat.

Yanni's panda is the biggest of them all.

-e 

 -> -er in the comparative

-> -est in the superlative

irregular form:

Good: good, better, best
Tom is better at English than Daan, but Ronald is the best.

Bad: bad, worse, worst

Tom is worse at French than Daan, but Ronald is the worst of them all.
