§4.5 Moving particles

p. 188-189
exercises 42-52 pages 190-195

Slide 1 - Diapositive

§4.5 - Learning Goals:
Content
  • I can name the transitions between the different phases.
  • I can describe the collision theory and how it affects reaction rate.
  • I can describe how the change in temperature affects the functionality of enzymes.
Language
  • I can describe the three phases a substance can be in and list characteristics for each phase.
  • I can explain diffusion and how it is affected by temperature changes.
Skills
  • I can speculate & describe how the addition or removal of heat changes the movement of molecules and how this can cause phase changes.
  • I can identify phases and phase changes in a graph.

§4.5 - Learning Goals:
LG - Step 1: Read the learning goals above carefully. In the 3rd column mark the ones you feel good about with a “+” and the ones you might be a bit worried about with a “-”.

LG - Step 2: Take a good look at the categories of learning goals and compare them to your scores from S1. Now rank your categories from strongest to weakest using the letters A, B & C. (A - being strongest.)

LG - Step 3: Discuss what you have just filled in on your table with your neighbour(s). Try to explain / argue why you made that choice and ask the person for clarifying questions if need be.

LG - Step 4: Think about what you have just discussed. Make any necessary changes in the marking of your table if need be. Use the last column please!

LG - Step 5: Based on the steps you have just completed, take a look at the table below. What 3 things / goals are you going to focus on this paragraph? Please write them down below.

§4.5 - Wordbank

Slide 4 - Diapositive

§4.5 - Wordbank
WB - Step 1: Take a look at the wordbank above, these are the new keywords for §4.1 - Forces. Complete the wordbank by marking a “✓” if you agree with what is said and leave it empty if not.

WB - Step 2: Discuss what you have just filled in on your table with your neighbour(s). Try to explain / argue why you made that choice and ask the person for clarifying questions if need be.

WB - Step 3: Take a look at the separate worksheet activity WB-1. Look at the images and text, try to complete them using the words from the wordbank above. You do this together if you want.

WB - Step 4: Think about what you have just done and discussed. Make any necessary changes in the marking of your table if need be. Please use a different colour.

WB - Step 5: Based on the steps you have just completed, take a look at the table below. What 3 things / goals are you going to focus on in this paragraph? Please write them down below.

§4.5 - Diffusion:
When temperature increases, molecules…
  • get more kinetic energy
  • move with more force and speed
  • spread themselves equally over
  • the available space faster,

this is called diffusion.

P.188-189

Slide 8 - Diapositive

§4.5 -Collision theory:
Chemical reactions don't just happen randomly, the molecules need to
interact with each other. In order for molecules to react with each other
they have to collide with each other.  This collision needs to happen with
enough force to reach the activation energy. We call this the collision
theory.

P.188-189

Slide 9 - Diapositive

§4.5 -Enzymes:
Increasingthe temperature will always
increase the rate of a reaction (speed). At
some point the speed of the molecules
will become so great that when
the molecules collide with each other
they actually change shape from
the force of the impact. This is
especially harmful for enzymes.

Hw for lesson 6:
  • Complete exercises 42-52 of §4.5 pages 190-195
  • Review your notes of §4.1-§4.5
  • Study the glossaries of §4.1 - §4.5 on Studygo
