Mise en scene

A French term
m
eaning:

the arrangement of the scenery
(props, actors, decor etc.)
on the stage of a theatrical production. (compositie van alle elementen van een theatervoorstelling)

We can also find mise-en-scene in a museum. Explain?

Slide 3 - Diapositive

Mise en scene - why?

Why is it important to pay attention to the mise-en-scene of your performance?

Slide 4 - Diapositive

Assignment
In pairs (or 3, max).
Everyone works with a 'scene starter', given by the teacher.
Start four steps away from each other.
- If you say something loving, kind, affectionate:
step forward
- If you say something shy, reserved, unkind or modest:
take a step back.

Slide 5 - Diapositive

Let the scene play out, moving backwards and forwards according to their lines.
If the two characters want the same thing, then they will end the scene pretty close together. If the characters want different things (one wants an argument but the other doesn’t) then the distance will remain the same or be even further apart. The distance between the two characters has now started to communicate some of the relationship between them.

Slide 6 - Diapositive

Feedback after performing
What does the distance between two characters tell us about:
- their relationship?
- the scene?

Why is it important to think about this while creating a piece of drama?

Most attention/least attention

Slide 11 - Diapositive

Half of the group (or ten people at least) divide themselfs on stage. They can do whatever they want to draw the attention of the audience (within moral limits :D). Every member of the audience points towards the person they believe is attracting the most attention. Round 2 is about trying not to attract any attention. Still the audience is pointing towards the person attracting the most attention (which means he/she has to change something, because in this round you don't want people to look at you)

Is focus always about making lots of noise? Or about your position on stage?
Mad libs
While creating your performance experiment with:

- distance between characters (last week)
- work with attention and focus; how can you give
   or take away focus?

Mise-en-scene
Mise-en-scène literally means: "placing on the stage"

WHERE do you place WHAT on stage?
The set design creates a clear stage image. Where do you place the set pieces? In the center of the stage or not? At the front of the stage or at the back?
Where do you want the focus to be?
--> we only use the blocks

Mise-en-scene

Slide 30 - Diapositive

Cet élément n'a pas d'instructions

WHERE do you place WHO on stage?
Mise-en-scène is also about how the characters move across the stage and where they are positioned within the stage image. How do the characters relate to each other?

During rehearsals, you can experiment with the mise-en-scène. Don’t make entrances and exits too predictable.

Think about: walking, sitting, standing → movement

Slide 31 - Diapositive

Assignment
Create and perform a short scene (3-4 minutes) that demonstrates thoughtful use of mise-en-scène and a supporting lighting plan.
You will be given a specific location as the setting for your scene.

Slide 32 - Diapositive

Cet élément n'a pas d'instructions

Steps for rehearsal
1. Make groups & location. Teacher will give you one!
2. Develop your scene.
3.  Create a lighting plan.
4. Rehearse & perform.

Today we work on step 1 & 2!

Slide 33 - Diapositive

Cet élément n'a pas d'instructions

Today: step 1 & 2
1. Groups - location
2. Develop your scene:
Decide who your characters are and where they are placed on stage.
Explore how they move, enter, exit, sit, stand, and interact with each other.
Use props, set elements, and costumes to support the atmosphere and story
(let op: je mag spullen van huis meenemen maar uit het theaterlokaal mag je alleen gebruik maken van de blokken!)

End of this lesson: I would like to see the beginning of each performance. It can be 30 seconds only; just make sure the location is clear!
