Actie uit het verleden die afgelopen is.

Past continuous

was/were + ww + ing

Actie uit het verleden die voor een langere tijd bezig was.

Gebeurde vaak tijdens iets anders gebeurde.

Past simple

She went there last summer.

Did you see her standing there?

I didn't feel like going yesterday

Past continuous

I was eating the cake while I was was watching the news.

Were you asking him a question when I interrupted?

They weren't giving me anything to work with.

Past perfect

had + voltooid dw

Actie uit het verleden die plaatsvond voor een andere actie uit het verleden. 

Geen nadruk op tijdsduur.

Past perfect continuous

had + been + ww + ing

Actie uit het verleden die plaatsvond voor een andere actie uit het verleden.

Wel nadruk op tijdsduur.

Past perfect

When I got home, I realized someone had stolen my bike.

Had they already left by the time we arrived at the station?

They hadn’t finished the project on time.

Past perfect continuous

They had been building the bridge for months when the storm destroyed it.

Had she been studying long before the exam?

He hadn’t been working there long before he quit.

Adverbs (bijwoord)

Eindigt het op -y: -ily

Eindigt het op -ic: -ally

Eindigt het op -le -> -ly

Onregelmatige: leren, bijv. good -> well
