Let's look at the painting for just one minute

What animals could you see in the painting?

1. A fox
2. A cat
3. Three birds
4. A cow

What are these close up of?

Trees and hill - notice how they echo each other in shape.

Discuss why the hill is red - the soil is the red clay of Co Armagh Drumlin country.

Look at the shape and colour of the fox and imagine how it is moving.

The class could use their arms to describe the movement.

Find other things with similar curving, flowing shapes like the fox.

The more you look the more things have flowing shapes - the hills, clouds, birds etc

The distant mountains are

1. Green
2. Red
3. Blue
4. Yellow

Blue mountains.

Spot the triangular shapes that echo the mountains.

Look for Luke!

The painting on the left is from around the same date and is a portrait of his daughter 'Vivien' by Augustus John
