Kingdom of the Netherlands 
(1815–1830)

After Napoleon: old borders & kings restored (Congress of Vienna).
New kingdom: Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg -> William I becomes king.

                                                                                           Big divide:
                                                                                           North = Dutch, Protestant, trade
                                                                                           South = French, Catholic, industry

                                                            1830: Belgium revolts → becomes independent.

Revolutions across Europe → demand for constitutional reform.

  • France becomes a republic.
  • King William II fears revolt in the Netherlands.

  • King loses power, ministers now in charge.
  • Second Chamber elected (by rich men only).
  • First step toward Dutch democracy.
