Sonnets

Petrarchan:

• Its 14 lines fall into two main divisions:

- first eight lines “octave,”

- final six lines, or “sestet.”

Sonnets

Petrarchan:

• The octave involves only two rhymes
• Rhyme scheme: ABBA ABBA.
• The sestet’s rhyme scheme varies, but it involves either two or three rhymes in patterns 
• Examples: CDECDE and CDCCDC.
  

Sonnets

Shakespearean:

• 14 lines divided into three quatrains  (four-line units) 

+ one couplet.

• The quatrains rhyme ABAB CDCD EFEF
• The final couplet rhymes GG
  

Sonnets - Focus

Petrarchan:

• Point of view: a man longing for a woman to return his love
• The sonnet sets up problem or describes incident in ioctave, then resolves or reflects in sestet
• Shift in tone between octave and sestet: “turn” or “volta.”
  

Sonnets - Focus

Shakespearean:

• Commonly three quatrains to reflect on given situation in slightly different ways
• Sometimes follows Petrarchan octave-sestet division
• Final couplet often exhibits a turn/volta containing shift in perspective or makes witty comment about foregoing material
