Puberty = the transition from child to adult.

Development = change

• physical development
• Intellectual development

Hormones

Hormones = regulatory substances, produced in hormone glands (hormoonklieren).

Pituitary gland (hypofyse) = an important hormone glad at the base of the brain.

Target organs = respond to hormones

Target organs

Receptors = structures with different unique shapes inside the cell membrane of each body cell.

Recieve signals from hormones and put cells to work.

Growth

• Pituitary gland: releases the growth hormone into the bloodstream.

• These hormones are transported to various body cells all over the body.

• The bone cells respond to the message of this growth hormone: they start dividing more quickly. 

• The cells increase in size, which is called cell growth. When they reach a certain size, these cells are able to divide again.

Cell devision takes place in the cartilage cells (kraakbeencellen).

Growth stops when growth plates (groeischrijven) ossify (verkalken).
