Multiple Choice Questions

Method:

 - determine the main idea of the text

 - read the question, make sure you understand the words used

 - show the tone of the answers (positive/negative, satire, irony)

 - mark the passage of text where the answer should be

 - read the passage and answer the question

show the tone = put a + next to positive answers, a - next to negative answers, etc.

Multiple Choice Questions

Tips:

 - are there 2 clearly contrasting answers? Choose one of those;

 - stuck on 2 that both seem right? Choose the one most in line with the main idea of the text/paragraph;

 - only change answers if you have new evidence, otherwise trust your gut;

 - 4 Bs in a row can happen, they try to trick you;

 

Multiple Choice Questions

Tips:

 - cross out incorrect answers;

 - answers containing words like always and never are more likely to be exaggerations and therefore wrong;

 - the longest/most complicated answer is not automatically correct;

 - still at a loss? Any answer is better than no answer.

 

What is the point made in paragraph 1 & 2?

1. In the past the male Y chromosome used to be more substantial.
2. Men are hardly able to cope with challenges of their male pride.
3. Procreation may one day be realised without male participation.
4. The male physique is deteriorating at an alarming pace.

Uitleg

De vraag is wat de hoofdgedachte van deze alinea's is.

- Signaalwoorden zijn but (1e regel), But (4e regel), So...that (6e regel).

- Antwoord C noemt voortplanting, maar dit wordt niet genoemd in de tekst.

- Antwoord D spreekt over het mannelijk lichaam, wat ook niet in de tekst wordt genoemd.

- In de 1e regel geeft het signaalwoord But aan dat het Y-chromosoom verdwenen is. In regel 4 geeft het signaalwoord But aan dat het niet meer is zoals het ooit was.

Er is dus een tijdsverschil, zoals ook staat in Antwoord A. 

Gap Texts

Method:

- read the sentence before the gap, with the gap, and the one after the gap.

- check for linking words

  > make sure you know what type of connections the linking words signify

Which of the following fits the gap in paragraph 4?

Answers: A Consequently,

In de zin voor de gap staat dat we kritisch moeten zijn (raise concerns) over programma's waar autoriteiten en journalisten samenwerken.

In de zin na de gap staat dat de witch hunt (hier verwijzend naar de bovengenoemde samenwerking) juist genegeerd werd.

Dat wijst op een tegenstelling.

Omdat ik mijn signaalwoorden heb geleerd weet ik dat het antwoord D moet zijn.

- De zin vóór het gat wordt besproken door iemand die vindt dat mannen meer moeten blijven verdienen.

- De zin na het gat bespreekt dat het einde van de mannelijke heerschappij nabij is.

- Er is hier sprake van een tegenstrijdigheid, dus antwoord D is juist.
