Voor de docent

Instructie zonder device

Throwing pots out of the window is an Easter tradition most famously associated with the Greek island of Corfu.

This tradition, 'Botides', takes place on the Saturday before Easter at exactly 11:00 am.

The reasons behind this custom are:

  • Welcoming spring and renewal: The tradition symbolises breaking the old to welcome the new, which perfectly aligns with spring and the resurrection of Jesus.

  • Shards bring luck: Breaking the earthenware pots (pitchers) is meant to ward off bad luck and bring good fortune and prosperity for the coming year.

  • Making noise: The loud noise of the breaking pots is traditionally seen as a way to chase away evil spirits.
