How does Eugene die in the book?
 A) He gets shot by his good friend Bobby. (2 points)
(p.172)

Explain this cartoon from the book. What does it represent? Give two examples from the book to support your answer:
It represents Mary's trailer in Montana where she lives with her husband (Flathead reservation) (1 point)

Slide 4 - Slide

Explain this cartoon from the book. What does it represent? Give two examples from the book to support your answer:
possible examples (2 points)

She ran away from the rez and moved to this place because she fell in love and Junior thinks this is very courageous of her since he wanted to do the same and looks up to his sister/is inspired by her.
  • Mary is living out her dream in Montana because she found freedom after being stuck in the basement for years on the rez. She finally escaped the rez, fell in love, and even though she still does not have a lot of money as you can see from her "house" in the cartoon, she is happy.
  • This is also the trailer in which Mary dies with her husband because they drank too much beer, passed out and the trailer burned down because someone left the hot plate on.

How does Junior feel about his grandmother? Give two examples from the book to support your answer. (3 points in total)
  • Junior has a good relationship with his grandmother, she gives him good advice and she is someone that he admires. Junior thinks his grandmother is very forgiving/tolerant, that she is better than anyone else and a very special Indian. (1)
  •  Junior's grandmother is hit by a car while walking back from a  mini powwow and has to go to the hospital. When she is on the verge of death, she tells the surgeon "forgive him." She says this because she believes the man who hit her with the car has to be forgiven, even though he was drunk and driving.
  • Junior's grandmother never drank alcohol because she believed this would shut down her seeing and feeling which was very special because many Indians on the reservation drink to forget about their problems. //His mother talked to anyone even the homeless (the invisible ones) and she did not like people who were not

Would you say that Roger is a flat or a round character? Give two examples to support your answer.
Static/flat – Stereotypes; they have one or two characteristics that never change and are often over-emphasized.
Individual/round - many-sided and complex personalities.

Roger is a flat character -> He is described as the stereotypical popular guy in school, seven feet tall/three hundred pounds, making fun of other people (makes a racist joke at Junior), always walks around with the same group of friends, really good at basketball. As a reader, you do not get to know a lot about his emotions and he does not have a complex personality.
Roger is a round character -> stereotypical behavior of the popular guy changes as he turns out to be kind to Junior and tells him that he and Penelope are a great couple. He even pays for his food at the diner after the Winter formal.

At the beginning of the book, "Starr attends a party in Garden Heights and somebody at the party gets shot. Who is this person? (2 points)
A) Dalvin
B) Maverick's cousin
C) Khalil
D) The name of the person is not mentioned in the book

p.172-173 -> Dalvin is DeVante's brother. DeVante is hiding from King because he wants him to go after the people that killed his brother.

Slide 8 - Slide

What do you know about DeVante? Mention 3 things (3 points)
  • Starr first meets DeVante on the basketball court when some young GDs start to look for trouble. DeVante (a King Lord) is the one that steps in to get the GDs to stop.
  • In the beginning, Starr thinks he is kind of cute.
  • starts working for Maverick in the shop once he is hiding from King (who wants him to go after the murderers of Dalvin).
  • DeVante starts living with Uncle Carlos once Maverick finds out that he stole 5 Grants from King to get his mother and sister out of Garden Heights.
  • DeVante is also the one who tells Starr that Khalil actually turned down King. Khalil never was a King Lord. King made it seem like it at the funeral so that other people would join the King Lords. Khalil's mom (Brenda) only stole something from King which is why Khalil started selling drugs with DeVante for King in order to pay the debt.

How would you describe Chris & Starr's relationship throughout the book Use two examples to support your answer (3 points)
Although they are in love with each other,  Starr has difficulties with opening up to Chris in the beginning because she thinks Chris will not understand her.
-  She does not want to have sex with him because she is afraid of getting pregnant and becomes angry at the fact that he is carrying a condom while she told him she was not ready.
- She does not tell her dad in the beginning, thinking he will be mad that Chris is not an African American boy, but that he is white.
- She thinks Chris will not understand what African American people have had to deal with (police brutality, racism, etc.) and first does not tell him about Khalil's death.
However, the relationship becomes stronger and Starr is able to be more vulnerable towards the end of the book. Chris even becomes friends with DeVante and joins Starr in the fight for justice.

Slide 10 - Slide

First, explain which event this refers to. Then, explain how you would describe the tone and why.
The quote shows what is going on in Starr's mind when she is interrogated by Officer Gomez at the police station. The event that Starr thinks about is Khalil's death and how he was killed by officer One Fifteen. A few words/expressions indicate that Starr is mad/angry/frustrated/ with the police officers because according to Starr they make it seem like they are looking for an excuse to have killed Khalil -> drugs. For example, Starr uses the words/expressions "what the hell", "I refuse", "I straighten up", "look her dead in the eyes." Starr is ready to fight against injustice and therefore the tone could be considered angry/mad/frustrated/tense etc.
