Learning Objective
At the end of the lesson, you will understand the evolution of computers through five generations.
What do you already know about the history and evolution of computers?
First Generation (1940-1956)
Used vacuum tubes. Large, expensive, and consumed lots of power. Examples: ENIAC, UNIVAC.
Second Generation (1956-1963)
Transistors replaced vacuum tubes. Smaller, faster, more reliable. Example: IBM 7094.
Third Generation (1964-1971)
Integrated Circuits (ICs) introduced. More compact and efficient. Example: IBM 360 series.
Fourth Generation (1971-Present)
Microprocessors revolutionised computing. PCs became common. Example: Intel 4004.
Fifth Generation (Present and Beyond)
Focus on AI and machine learning. Quantum computing in research. Intelligent systems.
