  1. understand the rules of  The Past Simple Tense
  2. be able to use The Past Simple Tense correctly
  3. know the difference between regular and IRREGULAR verbs.

Slide 3 - Slide

Past Simple
You use the past simple when something happened in the past and is finished.
The past simple is what we call in Dutch: de verleden tijd

Slide 4 - Slide

When do you use the past simple?

When something happened in the past and is finished.

e.g.

Barack Obama left  the White House in January 2017.

Slide 5 - Slide

To be: was / were
  • I                           was
  • you                     were
  • he (John)         was
  • she (Janet)     was
  • it                          was
  • we                       were
  • you                     were
  • they                    were

Slide 6 - Slide

Making questions using:      was/were

Look at the examples. Can you write down the rule that applies here?

He was very funny at the party.
Was he very funny at the party?

They were in Spain last year.
Were they in Spain last year?

Slide 7 - Slide

Making negations using:     was/were

Look at the examples and figure out what the rule is.

He was a funny boy.                                   They were very happy.
He was not a funny boy.                           They were not very happy.
He wasn't a funny boy.                               They weren't very happy.

Slide 8 - Slide

Past Simple - Regular Verbs
After a regular verb, you put '-ed', if a regular verb ends on '-e', you only add '-d'.

I walk -> I walked                           I love -> we loved
He walks -> He walked               She loves -> she loved
They walk -> They walked         We love ->we loved

Slide 9 - Slide

Past Simple - Regular verbs

Spelling:
Als een werkwoord eindigt op een medeklinker + -y, dan verandert de -y in -ie:

  • I carry - I carried

Let op, er verandert niets als het werkwoord eindigt op klinker + -y:

  • I play - I played

Als een werkwoord eindigt op -e, dan komt er in de past simple alleen een -d achter:

  • I live - I lived

In de past simple wordt de laatste medeklinker verdubbeld als er één klinker voor staat:

  • I drop - I dropped

Slide 10 - Slide

Past Simple - Irregular verbs
Some verbs in English are irregular, this means that in the past tense they don't get '-ed' at the end, but have their own form.

to write -> wrote; I wrote her a letter last week.
to go -> went; He went to Italy last year.
to catch -> caught: The police caught the criminal two days ago.

Slide 11 - Slide

Past Simple - Irregular verbs

There are no rules for the irregular verbs, you just have to learn them by heart.

Slide 12 - Slide

Past Simple - Questions/negations
Questions -> Did + infinitive (hele werkwoord)

Did he walk to school yesterday?

Negations -> didn't + infinitive

Slide 13 - Slide

These words help you to see if something happened in the past
  • yesterday
  • last week/month/Friday

  • in 2007/ in 2019/ in August (now it's September)
