  • Assyrian (8th Century B.C.): The earliest form involved layering bread dough with nuts and honey.

  • Ancient Greek "Placenta" (2 B.C.): The Roman/Greek "placenta" cake, a layered dish with cheese and honey, is considered an ancestor.
