In 476 the red part fell apart, in 1453 the purple part fell apart

Roman knowledge
After 476 Roman knowledge in the West was lost, books were burned.
After the east fell apart in 1453 refugees took Roman books to the West. 
Historians called the time this knowledge was lost the 'dark' or 'middle' (inbetween) age.
