Victorious countries redrew map of Europe. 

They were conservative. Against new revolutionary ideas about freedom, equality and brotherhood. They wanted to go back to the time when kings and nobles were in power.

Wanted a strong state north of France.

The new king of the Netherlands

Napoleon is defeated at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815:

Holland needs a new leader:

Stadholder William V has died: --> son Prince William Frederick of Orange-Nassau

Why did Belgium 1830 no longer want to be part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands?

1830-1839: Belgium becomes independent

Belgian Revolution

• During the celebration of the birthday of King William I in Brussels,
• the fire catches fire and the people revolt.

• Over a month later, the Belgians proclaim their independence.

Consequences

• 1831: Leopold I becomes the first Belgian king
• 1839: Under international pressure William I recognises independence
• 1840: William I abdicates
