Give a sentence using the future tense

Which sentences are written in the future tense?

1. He will help you next weekend.
2. I'm playing football Saturday.
3. She is going to play hockey tonight.
4. Our train leaves at 7pm.

The Future Tense

There are 4 ways to refer to the future in English:

1.  Will/shall + verb

2. going to + verb

3.  Present simple as the future tense

4.  Present continuous as the future tense

Grammar unit 3 on p. 202 

1. Will / shall

FORM: will /shall + verb

Examples: I will/shall,    you'll,     they will not (= won't) go

For I and we, you can also use shall.
NB in a question you have to use shall!  Ex:Shall we start? 

1. Will / shall

WHEN DO YOU USE IT? 

1. For spontaneous, non-planned actions such as offers, promises or predictions without any evidence) 

Example: We will help you later. (offer)

2. General references to the future

Example: Henry will become a doctor later.

Examples

1.  We shall help you with the dishes. (offer)
2. He will call Patrick tomorrow. (promise)
3. The concert will start in 5 minutes. (announcement)
4. Alicia will become a teacher. (general reference to the future)

2. Going to

FORM: am/are/is + going to + verb 

WHEN TO USE IT? 

1. To talk about what someone intends to do (intention)
2. For things that will certainly happen (with evidence)
   
   Example: Watch out! Those books are going to fall! 
   

Examples

1. We are going to visit Newcastle next weekend. (plan)

2. Look at the sky. It is going to snow tonight. (evidence)

3.  How are we going to get to London this Sunday? (plan)

It's suddenly getting very dark.
It ___ soon.

1. will rain
2. rains
3. is raining
4. is going to rain

3. Present Simple

FORM: verb + s for he/she/it     (= shit-rule) 

Example: The train leaves at 6 pm. 

WHEN? For things that are going to happen according to a timetable. E.g. public transport, school or training schedules.

Examples

1. The film starts at 8 pm tonight. (schedule)

2.  I saw that our team plays on field 5 tomorrow. (schedule)

The bus ___ at 9 pm. (to leave)

4. Present Continuous

FORM: verb + ing  

Example: I am meeting my father tomorrow.

WHEN? For something planned and organised: definite future arrangements. You have already made a plan and are pretty sure that the event will happen in the future.

Examples

1. We are going to the beach at the weekend.

2. I'm leaving at three pm.

3. Tonight, we’re meeting some friends for dinner at 6.

The wedding ___ next weekend.

1. takes place
2. is taking place
3. is going to take place

Choose one of the following assignments:

1. Write a horoscope;

2. Write about your holiday plans;

3. Describe what the world will look like in 50 years.

1. Next week's horoscope

Write a horoscope for next week for yourself and/or for someone you don’t like very much (min 100 words).

2. You are going on a holiday!

Imagine next year's Spring Break. You can go anywhere and money is no object. 

Where will you go?  What will you do? Where will you stay?

3. Predict the future

Describe in 100 words what the world will look like 50 years from now.

Assignment

What? Write a story of about 100 words, use future tense.

How? By yourself, talk softly. Go to Classroom for assignment.

Time? 10 minutes
