Slide 1 - Slide

What are we going to learn today?
Today we will be learning:
What characteristics all vertebrates have in common.
What classes of vertebrates there are.
What the characteristics are of the different classes within the vertebrate phylum.

Slide 2 - Slide

Vertebrates
Animals in the vertebrate (gewervelden) are the most complicated build, with a lot of organ systems. We are also part of this phylum :) All animals in this phylum have a backbone

Slide 4 - Slide

Vertebrates
This phylum consists of 5 classes:
Fish
Amphibians
Reptiles
Birds
Mammals

Slide 5 - Slide

Warm blooded vs. cold blooded

Slide 6 - Slide

Fish
Fish are aquatic animals, characterized by their gills and scales. They are cold blooded. While some fish lay eggs, others are livebearers.

Gills

Slide 8 - Slide

Amphibians
Amphibians are animals adapted to both living in the water and on land. They have both gills, but some of them also have lungs. The can absorb oxygen through the skin as well.

Slide 9 - Slide

Metamorphosis of frogs

Slide 10 - Slide

Reptiles
Reptiles are a lot like amphibians, but rather than living in both water and land, reptiles are more commonly found in warm and dry climates.

Slide 18 - Slide

Birds
Birds are warm blooded animals that lay hard eggs. They are the only vertebrate class that can fly.
Due to birds being warm blooded and the embryo inside a egg not having enough isolation, birds need to keep an egg warm. This is called incubation

Slide 19 - Slide

Mammals
Mammals is a varied group, which we are a part of! The one special characteristic they have in common is that they produce milk using mammary glands
Just like birds, mammals are warm blooded and breathe using lungs.

Slide 20 - Slide

All mammals give milk to younglings

Whales use blowholes in order to breath
