Why?
De tijdsverschuiving vindt plaats omdat er bij indirect speech meestal wordt verwezen naar iets dat in het verleden werd gezegd.
Doel:
om duidelijk te maken dat wat er gezegd werd, niet hier en nu gebeurt, maar op een eerder moment.

Past simple > Past perfect
The past simple usually becomes the past perfect in reported speech

for example:
Billy arrived yesterday > Joost said that Billy had arrived yesterday.

- These verbs don't change in reported speech:
might, must, should, could, would, would like

- That is often ommited in reported speech:
He said (that) he'd call you.

past simple -> facts, regularities-> full verb -ED
  • Joost said he walked to the park yesterday
Past continuous-> did something for a while -> was/were + main verb -ing
  • Joost said he was studying English at 8 p.m. last night. 
Past perfect->an action that was completed before another action in the past -> had + past participle(vltd dlwrd) of the main verb
  • Joost said he had written a letter
