You use the for a specific person, animal or thing (the same as de/het in Dutch)
  • The president gave a speech.
  • The book is on the table.

You use a and an for things that are not specific (the same as een in Dutch)
                  an  - when the next word begins with the sounds: a - i - e - o - u - au - ai
                  a     - when the next word begins with a different sound
  • It looks like a palace.             She’s wearing a uniform.                                 
  • It took us an hour to find it.We live in an apartment.
