Articles are words used before nouns to show whether the nouns refer to something specific or something general.

Nouns = zelfstandignaamwoorden
Articles  = lidwoorden

You can put it on the red table. (specific)
We need a new table for the class. (general)

A is used before words that begin with a consonant sound.
