At the end of the lesson you will be able to define solution concentration, calculate mass and molar concentrations, and explain their importance in chemical reactions.

What Is a Solution?

A solution is a liquid mixture where a substance (solute) is dissolved in another (solvent), forming a single, uniform liquid.

What Is Concentration?

Concentration tells us how much solute is present in a certain volume of solution. It is important in chemistry because it affects how reactions happen.

Ways to Measure Concentration

Moles in Volume

Measured in moles per cubic decimetre (mol/dm3). Use: concentration = moles/volume.

Mass in Volume

Measured in grams per cubic decimetre (g/dm3). Use: concentration = mass/volume.

Using the Formula: g/dm3

To find concentration in g/dm3, divide the mass of solute by the volume of solution in dm3. Example: 4g of salt in 2dm3 water = 2g/dm3.

Using the Formula: mol/dm3

For molar concentration, use the moles of solute instead. Example: 0.1 mol in 0.5 dm3 = 0.2 mol/dm3.
