Can You Make a Sandwich with One Instruction?
Be ready to share your answer
3
Imagine I tell a robot: “Make me a sandwich.”
Would the robot know exactly what to do?
• What information is missing?
• What could go wrong if the instructions are unclear?
• What should the robot do first?
Turn and talk: Be specific—computers do not automatically fill in missing steps.

2
• Define algorithm and sequence.
•Define command and program.
• Break a real-world task into smaller steps.
• Explain why computers and robots need clear instructions.

What Do We Need?
8th Grade Fundamentals of Computing • Ozobot EVO • Algorithms & Sequencing
5
• Two slices of bread
• A spread, such as peanut butter or a safe alternative
• Optional fillings: cheese, lettuce, tomato, or another chosen ingredient
• A plate or clean work surface
Clear Sandwich Algorithm
Demonstration
8th Grade Fundamentals of Computing • Ozobot EVO • Algorithms & Sequencing
6
1. Wash hands
2. Place two slices of bread on a plate
3. Spread the chosen spread on one slice
4. Add the chosen fillings
5. Place the second slice on top
6. Serve the sandwich
What must happen before the spread or fillings can be added?

Work with a partner: write the letters in the order you think makes sense.
Discuss: Could there be more than one correct sequence? Which steps must come first?
How Does This Connect to Ozobot EVO?
8th Grade Fundamentals of Computing • Ozobot EVO • Algorithms & Sequencing
9
• A sandwich algorithm gives a person or robot a plan to follow.
• A sequence tells the order in which the steps happen.
• In Ozobot Color Codes or Blockly, commands must be arranged to produce the intended behavior.
• If the result is wrong, debug the instructions, test again, and compare the result.
Big idea: clear instructions + correct order = a better chance of the intended result.
: Program the Idea as an Ozobot Sequence
Use Color Codes or Blockly—choose the method available in class.

START → STEP 1 → STEP 2 → STEP 3 → STEP 4 → FINISH
• Create a path with a start and finish.
• Plan five ordered steps for a robot-themed “sandwich delivery” challenge.
• Use valid Ozobot codes or Blockly commands to move EVO along the path.
• Predict, test, and record what happens.
The numbered circles show order only; use verified commands for actual EVO actions.

Partner Challenge: Write Your Own Algorithm
8th Grade Fundamentals of Computing • Ozobot EVO • Algorithms & Sequencing
11
• Write your steps for making your preferred sandwich.
• Number every step in order.
• Include enough detail that someone else can follow the instructions.
•Create a color code sequence for each step
• Revise any step that is missing, confusing, or out of order.
How do you know if you were successful? Evo must do a win dance at the end of the pathway!
Prepare your Ozobot
Extension: Add a choice—“If you want cheese, add cheese; otherwise skip this step.”

Quick Check
8th Grade Fundamentals of Computing • Ozobot EVO • Algorithms & Sequencing
12
• 1. What is an algorithm?
• 2. What does sequence mean?
• 3. What is one example of a mistake in the sandwich algorithm?
• 5. What does debugging mean in computing?
Exit Ticket: Explain Your Thinking

Teacher Notes & Suggested Answers
Suggested 35-minute lesson
8th Grade Fundamentals of Computing • Ozobot EVO • Algorithms & Sequencing
14
• Warm-up and discussion — 4 minutes
• Vocabulary and teacher model — 8 minutes
• Mixed-up steps and debugging — 8 minutes
• Ozobot pathway or partner challenge — 10 minutes
• Quick check and exit ticket — 5 minutes
• Key idea: algorithms are plans; sequences are ordered steps. Students may choose different fillings, but the steps must remain clear and logical.
Suggested mixed-up order: B → D → E → A → C.
