Explanation §2.3 - Culture
  • Culture is the way in which a group of people live together.
  • The main characteristics of a culture are called cultural elements:
  1. Language and religion: things to do with your intellect.
  2. Laws, family ties and education: things to do with how you live together.
  3. Clothes, food, buildings and art: the visible things in a country.

  • The spread of those cultural elements = cultural diffusion.

Explanation §2.3 - Culture
    • Cultural diffusion = the spread of cultural elements.
    • Important ways of cultural diffusion are trade and warfare.
    • Starting somewhere in the 15th century, western countries conquered regions around the world and made them colonies. What is a colony?
    • A colony = a country that is being controlled by and belongs to another country.
    • The western rulers forced the native people to learn their language, take over their religion, etc.
    • Even now, when most colonies have become independent, former rulers still play a large role (for example India & the UK).

    Explanation §2.3 - Culture
    • A culture never stays the same. New words, fashion, hypes, etc. all come and go.
    • Cultural diffusion = spread of cultural elements
    • Cultural blending = elements from other cultures are used criss-cross and adjusted.

    • Cultural elements blend in three ways:
    1. Mass media enrich cultures (for example: films, TV, social media).
    2. Migration brings cultural elements to other countries (for example: Indian curry is the most popular meal in England).
    3. Tourists influence the culture of the country they visit and vice versa.
