What are British values?
British values are ideas that help people live together.
They include:
democracy
rule of law
individual liberty
mutual respect
tolerance of different faiths and beliefs
Keep language simple. At Entry 1, students do not need long formal definitions yet; this slide gives the key list they will meet in the quiz.
Democracy
Democracy means people can choose.
Example:
voting in an election
sharing opinions
making choices as a group
Stress the simple idea of having a say. Avoid abstract political detail.
Rule of law
Rule of law means everyone follows the law.
Example:
stopping at a red light
paying for things in a shop
police help keep people safe
Use everyday examples adults know from work, travel, and shopping.
Individual liberty
Individual liberty means people can make choices about their lives.
Example:
choosing your clothes
choosing your job
speaking politely about your ideas
Clarify that freedom comes with responsibility and respect for others.
Mutual respect and tolerance
These values mean we treat other people kindly.
Example:
listening to others
respecting different religions
respecting different opinions and cultures
For ESOL learners, connect this to classroom behaviour and community life.
