The first Thanksgiving
In 1620, a group of English colonists sailed to America to establish a farming village there. The pilgrims planned to settle near present-day New York City. After a travel of 66 days, they arrived at 'New England'.

The Mayflower
The pilgrims wanted to use two ships: The Speedwell and Mayflower. Because the Speedwell leaked, they set sail with 102 passengers on the Mayflower. Many families got split up.

New England
After exploring the area, the pilgrims settled in an abandoned village. While building new houses, they continued living on the ship. Many people fell ill, because of the cold, wet weather. Only 52 people survived the first year.

The native Americans
After 4 months, the colonists first made contact with the native Americans. In March 1621, they made a treaty of mutual protection. They could not harm each another. Also, 90 native Americans helped the pilgrims work in the fields.

The first feast
In the fall of 1621, the pilgrims celebrated their first harvest. The 90 native Americans joined the party. During the feast, two cultures came together and were thankful for what they had.

National holiday
In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln encouraged Americans to recognize the last Thursday of November as “a day of Thanksgiving.” A few years later in 1870, the Congress made Thanksgiving (along with Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, and Independence Day) a national holiday.
