Literature time! (My favourite time :-)
We are about to read a short story with the title 'Chicxulub' by T. C Boyle.
It was first published in (the prestigious) 'The New Yorker' (an American magazine) in 2004.
The writing style is interesting, pay attention to how the story is built-up.
This may be a story you want to use in your Literature programme next year.

Slide 5 - Slide

NOTE! You cannot write in the hand-out, neither can you keep it.
Do you want to make notes? Grab a piece of paper and pen!
Find the story on its learning

Slide 6 - Slide

Keep in mind...
- The title is Chicxulub. (A devastating meteorite that wiped out the dinosaurs. Quite the event!)
- In a short story, the author has limited time to introduce characters and develop the story. Each word matters.
- In a short story, especially the beginning is important, it needs to hook the readers and set the scene. Pay attention to what happens in this story.
- Always ask yourself: who is telling the story? Is this a trustworthy narrator?

Slide 7 - Slide

Metaphor
A metaphor is used in this story. A metaphor is a figure of speech that directly refers to one thing by mentioning another. It can clarify similarities between two different ideas.
Keep your eyes out for this!
