What comes to mind when
you hear South Africa?

Did you know?

When you say South Africa, you say Nelson Mandela (1918-2013): apartheid activist, former president and global advocate for human rights. 

He spent 27 years in prison trying to overthrow the pro-apartheid government. As South Africa's first black President, he was respected for his courage and wisdom in bringing people together to live in peace. 

South Africa has 11 official languages in different language families, divided in several sub groups

watch both clips below:

clip 1 - de dame praat Zuid-Afrikaans en op je goed oplet, dan herken je wel bepaalde worden, maar als geheel heeft de taal zich heel anders ontwikkeld dan het Nederlands. 

clip 2 - is Xhosa - een klik-taal, waarbij het klikken onderdeel uitmaakt van het alfabet.

als jullie online werken, dan zul je zien dat er boven teksten een icoontje staat waarmee je de tekst kunt laten voorlezen. Probeer uit wat je prettig vindt; kan soms handig zijn om te lezen en te luisteren. 

homework:  assignment 1 - languages

- draw a map of South Africa 

- find all the 11 official languages spoken in South Africa

- point out in different colours where these languages are spoken, so in which part of South Africa

- choose at least 5 languages and give additional information about that language, special things about it, how many people speak this language, anyting else you can find out; maybe you can add link to video?

- take a picture of it and upload in lessonUp uiterlijk volgende week dinsdag 20 april

homework: assignment 2 - VIP Xhosa

choose one of these famous Xhosa people: 

Nelson Mandela / Trevor Noah / Miriam Makeba / Andile Ernest Jali. Explain:

- who he/ she is, where from, other details (persoonlijke gegevens)

- why you've chosen this person

- what he/she is known for, why important

- create at least 5 interview questions to ask

- if you could be him/her for one day, what would you do?

- min 1 A4 and max 2 pages, add a small picture
