In Pairs: Read the task on the slide below and the ESSAY QUESTION  on the next slide underline the points you must deal with. 

In your English class you have been talking about how much teenagers should help with housework.
Now your teacher has asked you to write an essay.
Write an essay using all the notes and give reasons for your points of view

Use the worksheets in the email attachment. Get students in to small groups and ask them to complete the Brain storming activity at the bottom half of the worksheet: (this creates the framework for their essay plan for the body paragraphs.

No subheadings in essay
Language is semi-formal
Use words such as, Firstly, Secondly, Finally to lead in your ideas.
Use language that expresses your opinion: I believe, In my view, In my opinion, I think

How to write the essay.
  • Read the essay question and prompts VERY carefully. Then you will know what you have to do. (25% of the marks!!!!)
  • It is important to keep the focus of the question and that ALL your ideas and opinions are relevant to the question.
  • Support your opinions with reasons and examples.
  • Think of a third idea of your own.
  • Ideas need to be expressed in a clear and logical way.

Sample layout

Remind students that a title is not obligatory for the Essay writing task but it does help the reader know what the essay is going to be about, so it is a good idea to give their essay a title. Might be easier to think of a snappy title after they have finished writing the essay. Try not to forget!
