Slide 4 - Drag question

The Southern States
- The US Census bureau (the agency that counts the
inhabitants in the US) has divided the all states into the four  regions and    hasn't changed that since the 1950s. Officially, there are 16 Southern states.

Slide 5 - Slide

The history
The United states started out with 13 colonies when they declared their independence from Great-Britain in 1776.

The US expanded and eventually tensions grew between the northern states of America and the Southern states. But why?

Slide 7 - Video

01:02
A

A
Door het gebruik van goedkope arbeid (slaven).
B
Door hun handel met Groot-Brittannië
C
Door het gebruik van onbetaalde arbeid (slaven).

Slide 9 - Quiz

01:27
A

Slide 10 - Quiz

- So slave labour was incredibly important to the South's economy an less so to the North.
- The Northern states began to feel that slavery should be abolished (=afgeschaft). Slaves were treated horribly. Aside from that though...the North was also interested in weakening the South's trade with Great-Britain...in order to improve their own economic position.

The confederates
(southern states)
VS
the Union

- The South was, of course, less enthusiastic about the abolition of slavery. That's when things changed.
- In 1861, eleven Southern states wanted to become their own nation. They called themselves 'the Confederate states of America' and fought against the United states.
- This period from February 8, 1861, to May 9, 1865 is called the American Civil war.

Slide 13 - Slide

The Confederates lost
- The war effectively ended on April 9, 1865, when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at the Battle of Appomattox Court House.
- Slavery was then abolished.
- The issue of racism though... was not over and it has been a battle to overcome.
