Engineering Sectors

This item has no instructions

Learning goal

I can state different sectors of engineering and name products and services linked to them.

This item has no instructions

What engineering jobs or products do you know?

Use this to activate prior knowledge. Expect words such as cars, bridges, machines, repair, phones or power.

What is an engineering sector?

An engineering sector is a main area of engineering work.

Each sector focuses on different:

  • systems

  • materials

  • machines

  • services

Engineers may design, build, test, install, repair or improve things in that sector.

Keep the definition simple for EAL learners. Emphasise that sectors are groups of related engineering jobs and work.

Engineering sectors can be grouped into broad areas:

  • Mechanical

  • Electrical

  • Automotive

  • Chemical

  • Civil

  • Aerospace

  • Telecommunications

Some sectors combine more than one area.

This slide gives a simple frame before the longer list. You can mention that many real jobs cross over, for example automotive engineering uses mechanical, electrical and electronic systems.

Products and services

Engineering sectors often provide both products and services

P
S

Link this to familiar examples: a washing machine is a product; fitting or repairing it is a service.

Maintenance and installation

This sector keeps equipment working and puts systems into place.

Products and services:

  • fitted heating systems

  • installed machinery

  • repair work

  • routine servicing

Stress that this sector is strongly service-based, but it may also include parts and fitted systems as products.

Manufacture and processing

This sector makes goods and changes raw materials into useful products.

Products and services:

  • metal parts

  • plastic items

  • food processing systems

  • factory production services

You can explain processing as changing one material into another useful form, for example chemicals into plastics or raw metal into shaped parts.

Which is mainly a service?

A

metal parts

B

repair work

C

engines

D

satellites

Checks the difference between products and services after the first block. 'Repair work' is work done for users, so it is a service.

Engineering sectors and examples

An engineering sector is a main area of work. Maintenance and installation often gives a service such as repair work. Manufacture and processing makes products such as metal parts.

What mechanical engineering does

Mechanical engineering is a type of engineering that focuses on moving parts and machines. Mechanical engineers design, build and test products such as engines, lifts and bikes. They use maths, science and materials to solve problems. In many jobs, they work with tools, computer models and safety rules. Mechanical engineering is important because it helps people travel, make things and use energy more effectively.

Electronic and Electrical Engineering

Electronic and electrical engineering is a part of engineering that works with electricity and devices. Electrical engineers often design power systems, such as cables, motors and lighting for homes, schools and factories. Electronic engineers usually work with small circuits inside products like phones, computers and alarms. They help to control signals, improve communication and make modern equipment work safely and well. Both areas need problem-solving, careful testing and good knowledge of safety.
