What is it?

The Dutch colonies where Suriname and the Antilles and the Dutch East Indies. 
When did the slavery in the Dutch colonies abolish?
The Netherlands was one of the last Europese countries to abolish  slavery.

In 1860 got the slavery in the Dutch East Indies abolished.
The slaves where replaced by contract labours from china, British India and elsewhere. These labours did the same work, but they got payed for it.

The abolition of Suriname and the Antilles
In 1863 the slavery was abolished in Suriname and the Antilles. Most of the slaves where forced to work another 10 years longer after the abolition. This is because the government did not want a fall of enconomy.

Keti Koti
On the first of July we still remember the abolition of slavery in Suriname and the Antilles. This is called Keti Koti. Keti Koti literally means: breaking of the chains. This is a day of celebration of freedom and remembrance.

The consequences
In Suriname the owners of plantations had to search for new contract workers. They came from Hindustan and after the British government banned these transports, they used people from Java. Those workers had the same circumstances as slaves but they got payed very little. Most contract workers worked 5 years but most did not get payed enough to travel back home
