Learning objectives: 'what I am going to learn?'
    I can ....
    • describe the path that air takes when you breathe / respire
    • explain why it is better to breathe through your nose
    • explain why it is better not to talk while you eat

    New key terms:
Nasal cavity - oral cavity - pharynx - larynx - windpipe
    bronchus - bronchi - bronchioles - alveoli - nasal lining -
diaphragm - ciliated cells - olfactory cells - epiglottis - uvula - vocal cord

Paragraph 2: Gas exchange and respiration

      Slide 17 - Slide

Learning objectives: 'what I am going to learn?'
      I can ....
      • explain what air is.
      • explain the difference between breathing, gas exchange and cellular respiration
      • explain the relation between photosynthesis and cellular respiration

      New key terms:
inhalation - exhalation - lung ventilation - gas exchange -
      cellular respiration

      Slide 18 - Slide

      This item has no instructions

Air is a mixture of gasses
breathing = lung ventilation = inhalation + exhalation
so your body takes 4% oxygen and gets rid of 3,96% of CO2 and a lot of water ... why?

      Slide 19 - Slide

      so 21- 17 = 4% O2 is used in the body
so 4-0,04=3,96% CO2 is waste from the body
a lot of water is exhaled!

      Why?
      breathing vs cellular respiration

      Slide 20 - Slide

      This item has no instructions

      combustion vs cellular respiration
combustion:  fuel + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water + energy
fuel :  candle, paper, alcohol, etc.
      energy: heat, light

cellular respiration = combustion is body cells
      fuel : glucose
      energy: heat, ATP

      Slide 21 - Slide

why do organisms need cellular respiration?
      - to move
      - to keep 37C body temperature

      cellular respiration:

      glucose + 1 -> 2 + water vapour + E
      A
      1=carbon dioxide 2= oxygen
      B
      1= oxygen 2= carbon dioxide

      Slide 24 - Quiz

When do your body cells respire the most?
      A
      when you run
      B
      when you've had your dinner
      C
      when you are asleep
      D
when you just have woken up

      Slide 25 - Quiz

when do your muscle cells respire the most?
      A
      playing basketball during PE hour
      B
      doing a practical during biology

      Slide 26 - Quiz

      This item has no instructions

You are shivering because the temperature in your room is 15C.
      - how does your body react?
      A
