What is a Fraction?
A fraction shows how many parts of a whole you have. For example, if you eat 2 out of 4 pizza slices, you have eaten 2/4 of the pizza.
Labelling a Fraction
A fraction has two parts: the top number (numerator) and the bottom number (denominator). The numerator tells how many parts you have. The denominator tells how many equal parts make the whole.
Working Out Fractions
Count the total number of equal pieces. That’s the denominator. Count how many pieces you have. That’s the numerator. Write the fraction as numerator over denominator.

The bottom number. It shows how many equal parts make the whole.
The top number in a fraction. It shows how many parts you have.
Numerator
Examples of Fractions
1/2 means one out of two equal parts. 3/4 means three out of four equal parts. 1/3 means one out of three equal parts.
Why are Fractions Useful?
We use fractions in cooking (like 1/2 a cup), sharing sweets, or dividing time. Fractions help us split things fairly.
