Percentage Power: Mastering Percents!

What do you already know about percentages in real life?

Learning Objective

At the end of the lesson you will be able to explain what a percentage is, calculate percentages of numbers, and solve real-life problems using percentages.

What Are Percentages?

A percentage is a way to express a number as a fraction of 100. It helps us compare quantities easily using a common base.

Percentages in Everyday Life

We see percentages in discounts, exam scores, statistics, and more. Recognising them helps us make informed decisions.

How to Calculate a Percentage

Finding the Percentage

To find x% of y: Multiply y by (x/100). Example: 20% of 50 is 50 x (20/100) = 10.

Percent of a Number

To find what percentage one number is of another: Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. Example: 15 is what percent of 60? (15/60) x 100 = 25%.

Practice Problem

Lena scored 36 marks out of 40 in a test. What percentage did she get?

Common Mistakes

Be careful with the base number. Always check if you are taking the percentage of the correct value—especially in multi-step problems.
