The Origins of Gothic Fiction

Gothic fiction emerged in the late 18th century.

The genre flourished during the Romantic era, when emotions, imagination and the mysterious came to the fore.

Writers were also responding to a more rational worldview:

Gothic fiction once again made room for fear, the supernatural and the unknown.

An early point of reference: *The Castle of Otranto*

Horace Walpole published The Castle of Otranto in 1764.

This novel is often regarded as the first work of Gothic fiction.

The book combines a medieval setting, family secrets and strange, ominous events.

Why did this genre appeal to readers?

Gothic fiction offered readers a blend of:

□ suspense and curiosity

□ strong emotions

□ danger lurking in the distance

□ a world where appearances can be deceiving

The genre demonstrated that fear stems not only from monsters, but also from guilt, isolation and secrets.

Developments in the 19th century

In the 19th century, Gothic fiction became broader and more complex.

Well-known works such as Frankenstein, Jane Eyre and Dracula employed Gothic elements in various ways.

As a result, the genre became not only a story about fear, but also about identity, power, science and morality.

Which work is often regarded as the first work of Gothic fiction?

A

Jane Eyre

B

Frankenstein

C

Dracula

D

The Castle of Otranto

Fill in the key terms

Gothic fiction emerged in the late 18th century and flourished during the Romantic Era. Readers were drawn to suspense, intense emotions and mysteries. In the 19th century, the genre became more complex and also explored themes such as identity, power and morality.

Why did Gothic fiction appeal so strongly

to readers at that time?

The setting as a source of tension

A Gothic story is often set in a setting that immediately evokes a sense of unease:

  • a castle, country house or abbey

  • a remote or dilapidated place

  • darkness, storms, fog or silence

  • corridors, staircases, doors and secret rooms

The setting is not merely a backdrop:

it heightens the sense of menace.

Mood and tone

Typical atmosphere in Gothic fiction:

gloomy

ominous

mysterious

emotionally intense

The tone often builds tension gradually rather than jumping straight into the action.

Typical characters

The following characters often feature in Gothic fiction:

  • a vulnerable or isolated protagonist

  • a mysterious stranger

  • a threatening or controlling figure

  • someone with a hidden past

Characters often grapple with inner conflicts.

Recurring themes

Common themes include:

  • secrets and forbidden knowledge

  • dreams, visions or strange signs

  • the supernatural, or something that appears to be so

  • imprisonment or a lack of control

  • family history, guilt and decline

These themes make the story uncertain and unpredictable.

Key themes

Gothic fiction often explores tensions such as:

  • reason versus emotion

  • civilisation versus the wild or the dark

  • freedom versus confinement

  • appearance versus hidden truth

  • humanity versus the monstrous

This gives the genre more depth than simply ‘being scary’.

How language builds tension

Writers of Gothic fiction often use:

  • sensory descriptions of sound, shadow and space

  • words with a negative or ominous connotation

  • delaying the revelation of information until later

  • a narrator who does not know everything or does not appear to be entirely trustworthy

Language therefore creates just as much suspense as the plot.

Which description best suits a Gothic setting?

A

Remote and dilapidated

B

Lively and cheerful

C

Modern en neutral

D

Open and sunny

Recognise the typical characteristics

In Gothic fiction, the setting heightens the sense of menace. The atmosphere is often mysterious or sombre, and characters frequently harbour a hidden past. Themes such as imprisonment and the supernatural also lend an air of uncertainty to the story.

In your opinion, which contrast gives Gothic fiction

the greatest depth?

From characteristics to a personal story

A strong Gothic story combines four key elements:

  • a menacing setting

  • a protagonist plagued by fear or doubt

  • a mystery or secret

  • language that evokes tension and atmosphere

Without this combination, a story feels more like ordinary horror

or adventure than Gothic fiction.

Building a Gothic plot

A useful structure is often:

  1. An introduction to a troubled place or situation

  2. The first signs that something is amiss

  3. Growing doubt, fear or curiosity

  4. The revelation of a secret or a threat

  5. An ending that resolves the situation or, conversely, leaves uncertainty hanging

What makes a story truly Gothic?

When writing, check the following:

  • Is the atmosphere palpable right from the start?

  • Does the setting play an active role?

  • Is there a secret or a threat?

  • Does the main character display inner tension?

  • Does the language use imagery and suggestion?

What makes a story more ‘Gothic’ than ordinary horror?

A

A monster

B

A lot of action

C

A combination of components

D

A funny narrator

From analysis to writing

A Gothic plot often begins with an unsettling place or situation. Signs then emerge that something is amiss, leading to growing doubt. This is followed by the revelation of a secret or a threat, and the ending may be deliberately left open.
